About

Ari Melenciano is a research artist who studies and designs conditions through which culture, perception, and intelligence become intelligible. Working across linguistic, computational, sensory, spatial, and social forms, she builds conceptual instruments that make difficult-to-perceive relations available for observation, experience, and intervention, with particular attention to how humans and computational systems affect one another.

Vocabulary

Terms (Re)defined:
I use these terms to label practices and frameworks I utilize. These term names have a longer-standing history, and I have substantially redefined their applicability by considering them contemporarily, culturally, and technologically:

Computational Anthropology:
A reverse engineering of the machine’s gaze to study, investigate, and reveal human behavior.

Critical Imagination:
Engaging with AI and advancing forms of technoculture with a balance between criticality (ethics, bias, societal-implication) and imagination (playful, possibility, creativity).

Embodied Mathematics:
Recognizing bodily movements as patterned gesture that is culturally learned, and becomes subconscious computation. It is particularly witnessed in dance, sport, cadence, and body language.

Created Terms:

As concepts:
Incomputable Intelligence,
Pneumareal,
Créolucence,
Alloentity
Provocware,
Crumbs,
Archipelagic Technoculture

As titles of Work:
Cosmeage,

The Age of Black Metal

+

Black Metal originated as a kitchen table art book reimagining the future of space travel through Black culture, spirituality, speculative design, art, and technology. The book emerged from an Afrotectopia-led incubator developed in collaboration with MIT Media Lab’s Space Exploration Initiative and NYU’s Interactive Telecommunications Program, with contributions by Jordan Caldwell, Kordae Jatafa Henry, Jeremy Kamal, and Ari Melenciano.

The Age of Black Metal expands the book into a participatory exhibition set centuries into a speculative future, imagining a society in which the principles introduced in Black Metal have become embedded into cultural and everyday life. Visitors encounter the book’s conceptual chapters through installations exploring botanical consciousness, metaphysical training, self-alignment, ritual, and alternative approaches to technology and space travel.

The exhibition extends this world through the work of fourteen additional Black and Pan-African artists and innovators, bringing multiple approaches to art, design, technology, spirituality, and speculative practice into dialogue with the original project.

At its center is a question of what Black cultural imagination might produce when given the space to develop beyond inherited limitations. The Age of Black Metal presents speculation as a method for considering how different values, practices, and forms of knowledge might inform the societies we build.

The Age of Black Metal was presented at Montclair State University Galleries’ George Segal Gallery and Kasser Theater in 2025.
