About

Ari Melenciano is a research artist who studies and designs conditions through which culture, perception, and intelligence become intelligible. Working across linguistic, computational, sensory, spatial, and social forms, she builds conceptual instruments that make difficult-to-perceive relations available for observation, experience, and intervention, with particular attention to how humans and computational systems affect one another.

Vocabulary

Terms (Re)defined:
I use these terms to label practices and frameworks I utilize. These term names have a longer-standing history, and I have substantially redefined their applicability by considering them contemporarily, culturally, and technologically:

Computational Anthropology:
A reverse engineering of the machine’s gaze to study, investigate, and reveal human behavior.

Critical Imagination:
Engaging with AI and advancing forms of technoculture with a balance between criticality (ethics, bias, societal-implication) and imagination (playful, possibility, creativity).

Embodied Mathematics:
Recognizing bodily movements as patterned gesture that is culturally learned, and becomes subconscious computation. It is particularly witnessed in dance, sport, cadence, and body language.

Created Terms:

Selected Works | hover for quick view
2026 · relational infrastructure

SOLORO

An album becomes record, instrument, radio, remix ecology, and movement interface.

relation / counter-design Open project ↗
2026 · research software

Pelagñou

Research software that makes connection, adjacency, and movement between sources part of how knowledge is discovered.

counter-design / relation Open project ↗
2026 · essay / design horizon

Pelagñou: An Archipelagic Technoculture

The essay argues for knowledge as relational and accumulative, and for technoculture capable of sustaining multiplicity without forcing convergence.

plurality / relation Open project ↗
2026 · umbrella framework

Incomputable Intelligence

A framework for studying what computational systems can represent, what they leave out, and what those limits tell us about intelligence.

legibility / remainder Open project ↗
2026 · concept / artifact

Alloentity

Identity as relational modulation: continuity maintained through adaptation across recurring encounters with environments and expectations.

conditioning / adaptation Open project ↗
2026 · research practice

Embodied Mathematics

A research framework for studying patterned gesture as culturally learned knowledge carried through the body.

transduction / pattern Open project ↗
2026 · sound work

Symphosynthesis_02122026

A specific sound work generated through the Symphosynthesis practice: plant bioelectrical activity enters percussion, synthesis, and live sonic decision-making.

transduction / composition Open project ↗
2025 · environmental proposition

The Age of Black Metal

A speculative cultural proposition becomes an inhabitable environment.

environment-building / counter-design Open project ↗
2025 · conceptual instrument

InnerCodex

The work treats the womb and subsequent environments as successive containers of influence, paired with a cartography of emotion.

conditioning / cartography Open project ↗
2025 · research keynote

Culture as a Cybernetic Field

Critical Imagination is organized as a method for observing culture as a cybernetic field and moving from diagnosis toward another condition.

critique / counter-design Open project ↗
2025 · artifact / tactile study

Cosmeage: A Study

The film is translated into a tactile archive of cinematic stills and process images, slowing the work down so gesture can be studied nonlinearly.

archive / embodiment Open project ↗
2025 · artistic research practice

Symphosynthesis

A repeatable practice that converts plant bioelectrical activity into audible or musically usable data and performs with it live.

transduction / relation Open project ↗
2024 · constitutional work

Theater of Meta-Interiority, Ensemble

The observer becomes part of the apparatus. Twelve perceptual capacities are externalized so different positions of seeing, sensing, interpreting, and relating can be entered and compared.
