BIO



Ari Melenciano artist and researcher investigating forms of intelligence that elude the machine, and cultural behavior as an emergent cybernetic field.


She has taught courses in new media technologies, design, critical theory, and culture at institutions including New York University, Pratt Institute, Hunter College, and Parsons School of Design. Her work has been presented internationally at venues such as the Museum of Modern Art, the Studio Museum in Harlem, the Venice Biennale, Sundance Film Festival, and the Museum of the Future in Dubai. 


In 2017, while a graduate student at NYU ITP, Melenciano founded Afrotectopia, a social institution dedicated to cultivating and expanding Black imagination and culture through art, design, and technology. 


And previously, she worked as a creative technologist at Google’s Creative Lab, contributing to projects spanning machine learning on fingertip-scale hardware; and research, strategy, and product development with generative AI and Responsible AI teams. 

Approach
Her work recognizes culture as an emergent cybernetic field. She examines how feedback and relation attune the lived experience, and how these internal processes further shape culture.

Symphosynthesis (n.): A ritualized practice that bridges human and nonhuman perception through sound. It translates biological signals into sonic forms as a way of attuning to alternative modes of intelligence.


Meta-Interiority (n.): The practice of observing one’s internal experience with awareness of the act of observation itself. A recursive mode of perception in which reflection and experience co-generate meaning.


Alloentity (n.): The relational dimension of identity; the ongoing negotiation of the self as a social interface, consciously and unconsciously shaped by influence, awareness, and motive.

Expanded:Computational Anthropology: An inquiry into how computational systems model, interpret, and shape human identity and culture. It reverses the machine’s gaze to reveal the feedback loops between data, behavior, and social imagination.


Melenciano’s expansion of Embodied Mathematics understands patterned gesture as a form of culturally learned, subconscious computation. It is particularly witnessed in dance, sport, and body language.

An Emergent Glossary of Incomputable Intelligence (I.I.) towards a Pneumareal and Créolucence Technoculture.

This glossary identifies the connective tissue across almost two dozen works by Ari Melenciano created between 2022-2026: that there are facets of sentient experience simply illegible to a machine. Yet it's through technology that an unparalleled capacity to feel, sense, and know gets unearthed. Through 22 new and synthesized terms, this glossary reconsiders past thought and language for a here and coming age. 

The glossary situates itself within two subcategories of technoculture Melenciano has identified: (1) the pneumareal: the suprasensible dimensions of sentience that exceed conscious language, and (2) créolucence: the particular lens formed when inhabiting multiple epistemologies simultaneously — Black in the Western world, woman inside patriarchy, an artist expressing through technology, a scientific mind with a humility towards the unknowable, and a descendant of the geo-political project that is the Caribbean world. Together they frame the arc of inquiry she calls Incomputable Intelligence.

This edition is a zipper pouch of 8 pockets housing 22 terms, alongside a lineage spanning 2,500 years of over forty thinkers. It references canonical thought across art, design, philosophy, and technoculture, and traces the connective thread across almost two dozen works Melenciano has produced over the past four years — several of which, including Cosmeage and Alloentity, are available as standalone releases on Metalabel, with others on their way. 

Acquiring these releases are an act of patronage to an evolving body of research, intended to be more accessibly shared in the near future.
